Granger High School Bingo and SANTA!

Granger High School hooked us up! They sponsored bingo. Then to top that, they had Santa come to see the Seniors. I was saddened that no one sat on Santa's lap. I'm sure that Santa wasn't too sad about that. However, the students took photos of the seniors and gave it to them for Christmas.

Halloween Fun

I'm sorry that I missed getting the Halloween celebrations on. Well . . . better late than never.

The Small World Pre-school did their trick or treating here. They looked adorable as usual. Our patrons handed them their candy as they paraded by.

We then had a costume contest. Here are our winners.

We kept telling them NOT to eat the candy. I guess we are never to old to trick or treat.

Cooking For One Paramesan Chicken & Broccoli Recipe

3 chicken tenders or 1 boneless breast
1/4 teaspoon bottled minced garlic
2 tablespoons sliced green onions
1/2 cup Uncle Ben's 90 second Long Grain and Wild Rice
1 cup milk
1 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 cup frozen broccoli florets
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Cooking spray

Remove tendons from chicken and place in a 2 1/2 cup microwave dish with green onions and minced garlic. Spray with cooking spray and microwave on high for about 2-3 minutes. In a small bowl, combine milk and cornstarch and add to chicken. Microwave on high for about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the broccoli and Parmesan cheese. Let stand for about 2 minutes. ENJOY! (Cook's notes): If you are using the breast of chicken, you may have to pound it to flatten it. You may add cooked ham or turkey sausage crumbles to this dish. Remember that microwave cooking times may vary depending upon the wattage of your microwave oven.

The Chess Club was able to go to their club leaders, Christi and Chuck Akerson's cabin in Kamas for a retreat August 2011. It is was such a success that they have made it a tradition to keep up.

Our Scrapbook Class had a great time touring the Stampin Up Company in Riverton. It was amazing all of the creative things the imagination can come up with. Here are some samples.

This is our tour guide, Amy. She was a super guide. There is so much that goes into running a business like this. They are very efficient. Amy also had everyone build their own greeting card. It was a fun day.

Wild About Watermelon

Everyone thought they were going to just eat watermelon. Oh no! You have to play with it first. The first contest was to see who was able to eat the watermelon the fastest. The catch here, was not to eat or lose your seeds. The seeds were needed for another contest.

Julie Abbot won lips down!

The next contest was to save the most seeds, (without sharing with someone else. Because they needed to use them for the next event.)

Valerie Wells won the Best Seed Harvester. I think she had 66 seeds. Can you beat that one from eating two pieces of watermelon?

Walter Cummings was awarded the Best Levis out of the Jean pool.
Now stand back folks, seeds are going to go everywhere. It's the seed spitting contest.

It was a tie SPLAT! Valerie and Perry Reisher were able to spit 6 seeds into the spitoon.

Cooking For One Fun

Here is the lastest recipe from the class Cooking For One.

Summer Vergetable Bake

1 T butter or margerine
1 garlic clove, minced
1 medium zucchini, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 t. chopped fresh basil
1 Rama tomato, seeded, chopped
1 to 2 slices whole wheat bread
1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese, divided
1 egg, slightly beaten
Hot pepper sauce (opt)

Melt butter in 2 1/2 cup microwaveable dish, add garlic until soft. Stir in zucchini, onion and basil. Cover and cook 1 - 2 minutes until vegetables have softened. Stir in tomato, bread cubes and 1/4 cup cheese. Pour eggs over ingredients in dish and microwave remaining cheese and let stand for about 2 minutes. Enjoy! (Cook's note: If you use hot pepper sauce, stir in eggs before microwaving.)

As you look at the photos, you can see that Bette Jean Young is a fun teacher.

It's really too bad that we couldn't do a scratch and sniff patch on this blog. The aroma was wonderful.

Sara Ruth Thorpe 96th Birthday

We have some very creative people. They paraded their creations around the room. Then we voted on first, second, and third places. Afterward, everyone that participated received a prize.

We enjoy delightful birds at the birdshow. The show lasted 30 minutes. 2 years construction at the park really paid off. It was a wonderful experience. You should go.

Jack's Tournament

The men at our center were somewhat hesitant to play Jack's. They told me that it was a girl's game. After convincing them to play, they enjoyed the game a lot. AmeriCare sponsored the tournament. It took hand eye coordination.

Update On The Noteable Angels Choir

The choir is lead by Eileen Pryor. Our band in this lower picture is Fred Edwards on the drums, Jay Miles on the bass guitar, Lorene Armstrong on piano, and David Murdock on the guitar.

We have approximately fifty members in the choir. Our choir travels during 9:00 to 3:00 daytime hours. No charge.

New Balance Exercise

We had a exercise class that taught how important it is to exercise to keep your balance. The patrons said they enjoyed the class.

Air Hockey Tournament

Our Air Hockey Tournament was exciting. Our challengers got into it. In fact, they found a few muscles that they hadn't used for a while.

The give a way just keeps going, and going, and going. The people that donate these items are so very generous. We appricate all their work. They have also made other items such as aprons, washcloths, placemats, and more.

Aurora Pacheco is a very loving talented person. She is very determined to learn English. We love having her in the choir.

Carolyn Mayoh was so excited to get this beautiful quilt. It made her day. Carolyn has passed away since. We miss her.

Clarence Stamps said that this quilt reminds him of his deceased wife. He will hold this quilt close to him and think of her.

D'Ann Gayler teaches our crocheting class. Her techniques of teaching help anyone crochet.

Diane Dull brightens up people's lives just being there. She has a calming effect of others.

Diane Stephens will be able to cuddle up with this holiday blanket, and a hot chocolate.

Elizabeth Nakata loves to scrapbook and sing in the choir.

Eva Stephensen is a gal I need to get to know. She is a new comer. Doesn't she look pleased to have won the quilt?

Greg Gramse is a great photographer. Some of the articles on this blog are photos that he has taken.

Jean Poulsen decorates the center for all the seasons. As you can tell, she is very pleased to have won this quilt.

Jim Olsen gets into Stocks and Bonds. He loves to play bingo too.

Julie Abbott is a giggle waiting to happen. Julie is always positive and likes to try new things. She is into scrapbooking, choir, drama class, bingo, trips, etc. etc. etc.

Leona Huntsman was taken by surprise when she won her quilt. There isn't anyone that shows and expresses gratitude more than her.

Manuel Martinez makes friends easily. He loves to serve people and help them fill comfortable.

Maurine Dubols is one of the ladies to make our beauitful tableclothes. She likes to keep her hands busy.

Ron Taylor is into everything. He is blind. So what, it doesn't slow him down. What very little sight he has he will challenge you in a game, or play harmonica, or anything that comes along.

Ruth Thorpe loves to play bingo and play cards.

Sandy Hanes is a great volunteer in bingo management.

Shirley Tripp believes in exercise. The doctor is always giving her a good bill of health.

Vickie Banks loves to volunteer. She is in the choir, drama class, kitchen helper, and other.

Vickie Smith likes to organize. Vickie loves to act. She loves to serve too.

Terry Facer helps around the center, especially the kitchen. He is also in the drama class.

There are still more quilts to win. We don't announce ahead of time when we are going to have a drawing. Perhaps you will be here and win next time.

Camp Wrinkle 2011 A Blast From The Past

The comment was made that every year we have Camp Wrinkle they just don't know how we can top what they have just experienced. Well, they continued, "You have. This was a 'BLAST'!"

Unfortunately we weren't able to take as many people this year. We weren't able to get another bus. I believe we could fill many buses with Camp Wrinkle fans. The fortunate thing was everyone played until they dropped.

Camp Wrinkle is an annual activity that we do in June. A week of Camp fun. We don't camp out. Our activities get us out of the building to explore and let our hair down. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you look on this blog (website) you will see Photos of our Patrons located on the right hand side. If you click there, you will see many active seniors and Camp Wrinkle. Look for Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5. These are the files for this article.

Our first Camp Wrinkle in 2001 was Linda Anderson's idea. She was the manager at that time. We are in our eleventh year. Time flies when you're having fun.

The first day started off at Planet Play. The children of our patrons were not there. Everyone let loose and turned by the clock on the years of their lives. They were young and full of energy.

If you think that seniors can't drive, they would have blown you off of this track. The operator of the track said they were more exciting to watch than any of the kids that come in. So what do you think of that one? There is something to be said for experience.

Good news, no one lost their dentures on this one. They really had a ride, holding on tight to the handles.

Sure, this picture isn't in focus. Look how tough they are. You're heart couldn't have handled this tough group in laser tags. It was the first time for most of them.

I hope that he knew this was only a game. He looks pretty intent on shooting something.

They could eat as much as they wanted to, as often as they wanted to.

See what I mean about being young?

The second day was at Hill Air force Museum. Knowing many of our people touring the museum had been in the wars, it became a personal event for them.

Day three we traveled to Washington Park. There were games, food, and a youthful attitude. Well, you could say, we just goofed off. This is my favorite day. I believe it is for many of our patrons too. What a treat to get out of the busy city for a while. The opportunity came where I asked everyone to quiet

down so they could hear all the nature calls around us. As soon as they were quiet, I bellowed out a Tarzan call. That was so fun. They didn't see that one coming. One of the perks of working in parks and recreation is the people allow the staff to have fun too.

We want to thank Scott for cooking for the seniors. He gets a long with everyone and fits right in. Scott saved their lives. . . they didn't have to worry about eating my cooking.

Staff - Eileen Pryor, Virginia Shay, Danna Polad, Charleen Walker and the Manager, Zenda Rogers. It may look like we were going to punch someone. No worries, we were doing our yes cheer.

David Walker was so good to make a Frisbee Golf game. I don't think that we will try out for the flying UFO convention demos.

The next day, day four was a buffet, entertainment, and the pajama party.

David Walker and Judy Slaughter did a Michael Jackson dance to his song Billy Jean. It was a hoot. We found a clip on YouTube and patterened it after it. They did great with the Moonwalk step.

Robin Arnold was a smash hit. He can sing a big variety of music. The ladies were secretly starting a raffle for winning the right to take him home until he unveiled the fact that he is married. He broke a few hearts.

At the pajama party everyone came in their jammies. All the couches and winged back comfort chairs were moved into the cafeteria. Everyone ate their dinner and snacked on goodies as they watched the movie "A Blast From The Past".

Keeping on track we jumped onto the Trax then transfered onto the Front Runner. Our destination was Ogden's Union Station museum. Inside the museum were trains, old fashioned cars, and a gun display. The restaurant's food was scrumptious.

It's easy to see everyone is wearing down. The energy level is lower toward the end of the day and week. What a treat it has been to explore and play with these young seniors. My wish is that it would have been nice to have you there too.

After leaving the museum we missed the Front Runner by about three minutes. That left us with around 40 Camp Wrinkle people waiting on the top level of the train for an hour. I told them camp stories, we sang camp songs, and some told jokes. As others were boarding the train most kept the top level to our group. One teenage boy was holding up his phone, recording the event. I'm sure he was telling his buddies about us. Just before the train started out the train employee told us that we were not on a school bus and we needed to pipe down. There were others to consider on the train. Oh well, we got an hour of fun on the train before they said anything.

Our cheer for the week went like this. . . The message was shouted out, and then the group would repeat the message.

We chanted this all week long. This is one of the songs we sing every year.

Camp Wrinkle is a bonding time. Making new buddies and finding out more about the old ones. So before I close this article, let us cheer one more "Yes!"

Cooking For One Recipe

Chicken Noodle Casserole

1 cup cooked, diced chicken
1/2 cup cooked noodles
1/2 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 Tablespoon chopped pimento
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper or Mrs. Dash Original
1/3 cup crushed potato chips
1/2 cup grated cheese

Combine noodles with remaining ingredients, except chips in a 2/1/2/ microwaveable dish. Mix well. Cover with waxed paper and microwave on high for about 2 minutes, stir and continue cooking for about 2 minutes longer. Stir again and sprinkle with potato chips. Microwave on high for 1/2 or 1 minute. ENJOY

Senior Idol Event 2011

I need to report it is fantastic to be part of this program of the "Senior Idol". It's easy to see that the senior population still have talent. Every year they top themselves. To see all them perform on stage, then watch them walk off winners is very rewarding to me.

When I started this six years ago, I had no idea what affect it would have on me. My experiences with all of the past singers through the contest has been humbling. Each one touches my heart when they sing. I can see in their faces that they are a star. They each share from their soul and wonderful voices.

Thank you for teaching and sharing me. Hopefully this program will last for many years to come.

The Price Is Right

We have never had a group game so supported like THE PRICE IS RIGHT! The enthusiasm of the group was on fire fun. Our contestants won some good prizes.

Second To Bowl 300

Jay Thorsted bowled a 300 score on bowling. The only other was Edward Shepard in March 2010. Everyone is trying hard to hit the bragging rights score of 300. We'll see who will be next. However, we need to mention that Virginia, our Kitchen Manager was able to get 300 score at home.

Tracy Avery Birds Visit Our Center

The Tracy Avery taught us about bird life styles. Vickie Smith was their demo project.

Barn Yard Owl and a Toucan Bird were the birds from the Avery.

The owl had plans of it's own. It took off flying and found happiness in front of a mirror on the center's stage. You could say, he was a real HOOT!

Win It In A Minute

Wow! That was fun! Yesterday we let loose and played games galore. David Walker put so much work into the whole collection of challenging trick games. There are around 200 photos taken by Danna Polad to share with you. As of yet they wouldn't all download onto the site. So if when you read this article, make sure you check back and see the photo fun. Look for Photos of our Patrons. They are downloadable photos. Who has more fun than our center?

This game had strings hung off or your ears. The pencils were as an elevator with a piece of candy on them. As the player pulled on the string the elevator would approach to the mouth. If the candy didn't fall off, the person got to eat their candy.

If you could unlock the key to this game you would hook all three keys onto the string without dropping one. These two were the first ones to play. They had it the hardest. We made them play while holding the pole in their mouths. They did a darn good job too. Everyone else was able to play holding it in their hand. It became too hard with the mouth one, so we moved to useing hands instead.

Quilt Winners

There was a very generous anonymous person that has donated handmade lap quilts to the center. Another one that donated afghans. We are using them for business builders. Do I have your attention now? How would you like to win one of the beautiful quilts or an afghan?

Well dear reader, you need to be here the day (undisclosed date) we are going to give away a quilt. Right after we announce we are giving away a quilt, we give raffle tickets out. If your number is called, YOU WIN!

The mission of this quilt giveaway is to get more people here. That is why no one will be told when the drawings are. There is no charge. The stipulation is you need to be here in person, 60 or older/or with a spouse that is 60 or older. After you have won, that is your last drawing for the quilts. Everyone can only win once.

Rose Gaulazzi loves Bingo! She is some what new to the center. We have her hooked! She loves it here, and we love having her here.

Jesse Greathouse is a long standing gentlemen that loves to eat lunch here. Beats having to cook for 1 and clean up the kitchen afterward. He has his buddies here to shot the breeze with.

Pete Harman Day

Our Pete Harman Day theme this year was Aloha Pete. Those who wanted to wore the island attire. It was exciting to see so many get into the groove of it. All the photos are not going to be shown in this article and can be seen on the blog under Photos of Patrons on the right hand side of the blog.

The entertainment tried to teach some from the audience how to dance. Look at the lady teaching in front. I think that she has a little giggle in there, what do you think? We had a great time.

Everyone did their best to dance the island way. The thumbs up was a relieved teacher, that no one got bopped in the head with the balls on the strings.

The good times rolled on and the food was great. Most of all, we thank Pete for his love and support of this wonderful center. It has changed peoples lives. It gives them happiness that their own four walls at home don't have. So with a twinkle of happiness in our eyes and a smile on our faces, we look forward to another great year a head.

Big Whopping Liar Contest

Halloween Was A Blast!

October was very festive. The events spun from one to another. No one has been bored here. To start with, some of our crew decided to try driving to the Gardener Village trip themselves.

It didn't take them long to figure they'd better let Danna drive them to their location. (You know how independent seniors like to be at times).It was a safe landing. Do they look a little relieved?

October 28th, the West Valley Small World Pre-School children came Trick or Treating! Thanks to the help from the West Valley City Police department, the children were safe coming and going.

We had a lot of fun with the children. They are always adorable. Our patrons sit on the chairs giving out candy as the children circle around holding their trick or treat bags open. The children also treat us with their Halloween poems and songs. We love spending time with the little spooks.

Cooking for One Recipes

Chicken Enchiladas

3 flour tortillas
1/2 cup cooked and shredded chicken
1/4 coup guacamole dip
1/4 cup refried beans
1 10oz. can mild enchilada sauce
1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
Vegetable cooking spray

Pour enchilada sauce into microwaveable 2 cup dish, just enough to cover the bottom (about 2 tablespoons). Spray tortillas with vegetable spray, both sides. Microwave on paper towels about 15 seconds. Spread refried beans on tortilla, leaving about a 1/2 inch border and spread guacamole on top of beans. Place about 2 to 3 tablespoons of chicken on top of guacamole and complete with about a tablespoon of cheese. Roll up and place in bottom of pan. If the tortilla doesn't quite fit, tuck both ends under. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Pour enchilada sauce (about 1/4 cup) on top of rolled tortillas, cover with waxed paper and microwave on High for about 4 minutes (depending upon your oven). Spread about 2 tablespoons of cheese on top and microwave for about 1 minute until cheese melts. Let stand. ENJOY!

Chicken Enchiladas with White Sauce

3 flour tortillas
3 chicken tenders
1/4 cup red bell pepper, finely diced
1/4 cup green pepper, finely diced
1/4 cup onion, finely diced
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup chicken or turkey gravy
1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
Vegetable cooking spray

Cook chicken tenders in microwave 2 cup dish on High for about 2 minutes, remove and shred with a fork and set aside. Spray peppers and onions with vegetable spray and microwave 2 minutes and set aside. Spray each tortilla with cooking spray, both sides and place on a paper towel. Microwave tortillas on High for 15 seconds. Remove from oven and place about a tablespoon of chicken in the middle of the tortilla. Top with about a tablespoon of pepper mixture and a sprinkle of cheese. Roll up tortilla and place in dish. If the tortilla doesn't quite fit, tuck both ends under. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Combine sour cream and gravy and pour over enchiladas. Microwave on High for about 4 minutes. Spread with about 1/4 cup of cheese and microwave on High for about 1 minute. Let stand. ENJOY!

Cinnamon Rolls In A Mug

Using refrigerated cinnamon rolls in a tube, place 2 - 3 tolls (or 1 1/2 Grand rolls) in a 10oz. microwaveable mug. Microwave on High for 90 seconds. Cool and frost.

Spaghetti Pie

1 cup leftover spaghetti, warmed
1 part of butter
2 Tablespoon Parmesan cheese, grated
1 egg
1 cup spaghetti sauce
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella Cheese

In 2 cup microwaveable dish combine spaghetti and butter and microwave for 30 seconds to melt butter. Combine egg and Parmesan cheese and stir with fork. Pour 1/2 of egg mixture into a crust in the dish. Pout pasta sauce over the center of the spaghetti and microwave on High for about 4 minutes. Sprinkle Mozzarella cheese over sauce and microwave for 1 minute on High. Let stand for about 2 minutes. ENJOY! (Cook's Note): For you creative cooks, you may use ground beef or sausage with the pasta sauce.

Muffin In A Mug

1 cup instant muffin mix, streusel cake mix or any cake mix
3 ozs. milk
1 Tablespoon mint chocolate chips (or raisins, apples, etc.)

Pour muffin mix, milk and mint chocolate chips into a 100z. microwaveable mug and mix. Microwave with seal on but not sealed for 2 minutes on High and 1 minute at 50%. (For streusel coffee cake, microwave 2 minutes on High and 2 minutes at 50%). Cool and energetically tap muffin out of the mug. Drizzle with icing or dollop with whipped topping. ENJOY! Wii Bowling Center Tournament 2010

We had four teams.

1st team consisted of LaRae Wickens, Vickie Smith, Steve Smith and Doris Bohman. Out of their team Vickie Smith had the highest score. LaRae won HONORABLE EFFORT.

2nd team members were Elizabeth Nakata, Vickie Banks, Duane Banks, and Geri Ness. The highest score for their team was Geri Ness.

3rd team was Jay Thorsted, Rex Clark, Benita Bushnell, and Virginia Shay. Virginia had the highest score in their team.

4th team were the OVER ALL BEST TEAM. Team members were Mary Mecham, Jack Schmidt, Edward Shepard, and Jean Poulsen.

Shep had the highest score of their team, and BEST MAN PLAYER.

Jean won BEST WOMAN PLAYER.

We want to thank Beverly Bobbit for donating the trophies.

Our Chess Club News

The Chess Club recently received a donation of more than 200 chess books. (The bookcase in this picture only shows part of the collection, and the rest of the books have now been added.) The books were donated by Eve Bertran on behalf of her husband Ken, who recently passed away. Ken was an avid chess player, and we are happy we can put his books to good use. The chess club meets every Wednesday at 12:30 pm, and players of all skill levels are welcome. Shown in the picture: Rodger Dick, Jay Thorsted, Dennis Creek, and Jerry Davis.

Wii Games

Our seniors love the Wii Games. They have learned how to bowl so well on it that they join in tournaments with the other centers. Their laughing and cheering is so loud you could swear the walls are moving. You know they are having a good time.

Here are some of the things you could be doing on the Wii. Boxing, Bowling, Baseball, Golf, Tennis and a whole Wii Fit (fitness) program.

The Wii Fit is played by stepping on the balance board and put your balance, strength, and flexibility to the test with more than 40 fun activities. You can check your BMI and Wii Fit Age every day to keep tabs on your health and work toward a more fit you.

We have a fun challenge. . . Edward Sheperd has bowled a 300 score. So now anyone getting a 300 score will get their name on the list. Then we will have a tornament with the 300 people.

There are approximately 45 members in the Noteable Angels Choir. Directed by Eileen Pryor. Musical instruments: Lorene Armstrong - Piano, Fred Edwards - Drums, David Murdock - Guitar. We travel with our performances. Members are able to sing songs that are whimsical, romantic, emotional or devoted. The selection of music can be anything from the Good Ole Days, to Modern music. The choir meets Tuesdays and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

The Oil Painting Class is a close knit group. They have such a good rapport with each other they feel like family. The teacher Judy Anderson said; "My seniors rock! I love teaching them. My students are excellent artists. People really enjoy our art shows."

Judy has taught at our center for eight years. There are thirteen students in the class. Sorry, no more students being accepted. Classes are Mondays at 9:00 a.m.

Chess Club
